Immunopharmacology Group
The Immunopharmacology group is based at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. This is a multidisciplinary group with researchers and students from 10 Departments at 5 Faculties or Institutes (Medicine, Biological Science, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Odontology). The purpose of our work is to understand molecular mechanisms and physiological consequences of leukocyte accumulation in vivo. In the context of chronic inflammation, such knowledge may lead to development of novel anti-inflammatory drugs. In the context of infection, it is crucial we define mechanisms and mediators of resistance to infection or induction of disease. A range of models of inflammation are carried out in the laboratory, including models of infection, arthritis, pneumonitis, CNS inflammation, and metabolic, kidney and oral diseases. A major objective of the laboratory is to translate findings in animal models to human diseases. To this end, a significant proportion of the laboratory studies biomarkers, isolated cells and disease parameters in patients who attend the University hospital.
Our group is subdivided in several smaller laboratories with their specific research aims, all focusing on inflammation and its physiological role.
Work in the laboratory is funded by FAPEMIG, CNPq, CAPES, FINEP, the European Community and several small grants with Pharmaceutical Companies, including with GSK Trust in Science Program.
A major project hosted by the group is the Instituto Nacional de Ciencia e Tecnologia em Dengue (INCT em Dengue – Hyperlink), funded by the Ministries of Health and of Science, Technology and Innovation. This project aims to provide the necessary science, technical knowledge and information necessary for the control of dengue in Brazil and worldwide.
